about

About the Record:
These unorthodox post-bop arrangements rip the listener from the comfort of tradition and into the terra incognita of free jazz's 21st century experimentations. These pieces lack long-winded meandering, which has poorly characterized the genre from day one. By way of analogy, the Raza Session tracks are concise haikus, rather than sprawling epics. Furthermore, the record's live energy is captured in the starkly crude instrumental and compositional elements of each opus.

About the Sessions:
On a set of lazy spring weekdays in Portland, Oregon, the Bates Jazz Masterclass Ensemble gathered 17-strong at the Raza Studios. Bates' Masterclass groups are assembled from the institution's brightest pupils and alumnus alike. These sessions in particular were directed by three visionary leaders: Professor Stack Stevens contributed some of his most ebullient arrangements to date. Willie Nilly showcased his infamous performance-art philosophy on five first-take oeuvres. Finally, Ddreû Bhle-Tsóe graced the ensemble with two previously unrecorded compositions of her late father, Faår Tsølūwd.
